Bamburgh Castle

Photographing Bamburgh Castle from both the north and south sides offers two vastly different perspectives. From the north, you can capture the majestic castle rising dramatically against the sky, with the sandy beaches and rolling dunes creating a stunning foreground. Meanwhile, the south side provides a more intimate view, showcasing the castle’s impressive architecture framed by the coastline and sometimes stunning sunsets. Both angles highlight the castle’s commanding presence and unique beauty, making it a must-see spot for any photographer wishing to capture the essence of this iconic Northumberland landmark.

Dunstanburgh Castle

Photographing Dunstanburgh Castle from the north side offers sweeping views of the castle’s rugged ruins set against the expansive North Sea horizon, often with dramatic skies and rolling sands in the foreground, and not forgetting the infamous “death rocks”. From the south side, you can capture a closer, more detailed perspective of the castle’s impressive stonework and its dramatic coastal backdrop, especially striking at sunrise or sunset. Both angles showcase the castle’s storied history and stunning seaside location, providing photographers with a variety of breathtaking compositions.

Holy Island

Photographing Holy Island's castle, upturned boats, and the causeway presents a rich tapestry of composition and storytelling. Start with Lindisfarne Castle, a stunning 16th-century structure perched on a volcanic crag, where capturing it during the golden hour yields dramatic shadows and highlights. The juxtaposition of the castle against the expansive sky and coastal landscape creates a striking image. Next, focus on the upturned boats dotting the shoreline; their weathered textures and vibrant colors add character and a sense of place. Position yourself low to the ground for an engaging perspective that emphasizes their forms against the backdrop of the sea. Finally, the causeway, with its winding road and refuge huts leading to the island, serves as a perfect leading line in your compositions. Photograph it at low tide to capture the intricate patterns of sand and water, and consider a wide-angle shot to encompass the vastness of the landscape.
